2014.05.28 Herefordshire Spring Landscapes by Tom Glendinning

I've been up to all sorts recently - however an update for now on the Herefordshire Iconic Landscapes Project. I have made a number of rather successful shoots so far this spring, despite difficult weather! In response to Mark Doyle's request they are now all together as a slideshow complete with titles and info, hence this post - peruse via link below!

View the set on Flickr here

Soon the collection will have its own dedicated mini-website and become available for purchase as prints and wall pieces, as well as the option to buy a digital slideshow of all the images (great for an office/ reception). If this is of interest to you or anyone you know,

This is one of my favourite recent 'circumstantial' shots. A case of being in the wrong place for what I really wanted, but the right time for that place.

Many shoots are planned and I spend hours on hilltops in all weather getting them right, some have almost instantaneous results.

Example: This panorama was taken after I thought I had all the images I wanted at the time, in that place. Sunrise was getting on and I felt the light quality on the fog was lessening - time to move fast and find another location before its too late. Quickly add the panorama from the tripod location. Move. Turned out that this was by far the best result.

2014.05.06 Property & Paper by Tom Glendinning

OK so I’ve been busy.

This post is a couple of jobs I’ve finished very recently but I’ve also been back in architecture doing drafting work, taking business portraits and shooting landscapes.

The editing backlog is growing - look out soon for:

Parisian Street Photography

Herefordshire Spring Landscapes

Massage(!)

Clouds (ever more)

Other cool things.

I’m also starting work at Clifton Photographic Company - a Bristol portrait studio. I’m volunteer shooting for the Park-on-Park Street event on 1st June, as well as getting photographically involved with

Concern Universal

, my charity of choice based in Hereford.

As for todays photographic offering:

The property is all renovated by Alexander Henry Property (The talented Streatfeild brothers) in London. Give them a house, it will become wonderfully minimal and superbly tiled. There will be truly excellent brass taps.

The paper products are by

Whitehall Printing

in Bristol. They are BRILLIANT, use them.

2014.04.09 Macro Lesson with James Dunbar by Tom Glendinning

I love macro.

When I bought a macro lens a few years back now I was captivated at exploring tiny tiny worlds, millimetre at a time.

I got to know James Dunbar via TEDx BRS2013, learning that he shoots flabbergastingly  good insect behavioural photography. With a scientific background he is full of knowledge on the nature the now spends most of his time crawling around in.

Knowing the dangers of becoming hooked in macro obsession, I took up his offer of a trial lesson before he launched his new career teaching unsuspecting public the ways of 4:1 photography. Todays post is the results of that shoot.

It was very early in the season for insects, though while the misty air did not bring out flyers it did make beautiful spiders webs everywhere in leigh wood, Bristol, where he takes his lessons.

The shoot was almost entirely handheld with no image stabilisation! A big surprise for me. I also experimented with some off camera fill flash in a macro environment for the first time, creating gradated grey-black backdrops and allowing me better control of shutter speed and depth of field for desired effect.

James is now taking classes - get in touch with him and see his INCREDIBLE work at:

http://jamesdunbarphotography.com/

He is also running a kick-starter campaign to make a film about solitary bees. This is awesome.

Solitary

bees you say? Check it out

There are so few documentaries about the miniature natural world!

You should totally support this by pledging with your wallet and spreading with social media.

The Bath Half Marathon 2014

Was a drizzly, chilly affair. As a spectator you felt rather silly, trussed up in layers of warm and waterproof clothing as scanty lycra and goose-pimple clothed women and men ran past. I took some shots up to the point Alex Streatfeild ran past, then I had lasagne.

Highlights for me were a couple running with hands held, the juggler (who made the whole distance like that), the toilet girl and the chap with FOR MY MUM.

Oh, and the Sesame Street guys were fantastic.

This winter has been extremely dull on the skies front. Even the storms yielded little more than a grey blanket of various hues.

I was suffering from cloud related withdrawal…

Two weeks ago I had the fantastic opportunity  to shadow

Peter Cook

- an architectural photographer whose work I greatly admire. After getting in touch via

Mitchell Taylor Workshop

architects where I used to work and many of whose projects he has photographed superbly, he was happy for me to accompany him on a photoshoot. I (of course) took my camera as well, follows is my impression of the new building.

Denton Corker Marshall recently completed the new Visitor’s Centre for Stonehenge, nestled between the rolling Salisbury downs. A good attention to simple details and careful complimentary aesthetic choices make for a harmonious structure. It works like a large pavilion, two buildings, timber clad and glass, are occupied by exhibition/toilet facilities and café/ education centre respectively. The waveform thin metal roof on a support of angled columns covers and obscures the blocky forms and camouflages them in relative form, amongst the hills and surrounding trees. They provide cover (of sorts, the wind is always strong on the hills) but more importantly a good sense of place a squat building would not merit.

The buildings themselves also extend a respectful obscurity with materiality. Vertical timber facade and reflecting glass box create a patchwork of colour that does not feel out of place.

The only negatives I can put forward from my brief visit originate from items outside the designer’s control. The glaringly blue buses assisting with the ferrying of large number of tourists to and from the stones themselves; and the predominance of poor signage choice by the occupiers of the building (spot the bright yellow ‘PRIVATE ACCESS’ signs calling your attention to an otherwise almost featureless hidden door, amongst others!)

It’s been a fairly quiet month so far, with more networking and contact-finding than commissions. However some fun points before todays post:

>

I’ve started working as an assistant with

Colin Hawkins

, an excellent local photographer, through contact with his primary assist,

Laurie Lapworth

.

The first job was a brief for a BBC show on animal’s sleeping habits.

Bristol Zoo. Dark. Wind. Lions. Presenter. Holding heavy lighting rigs at full extension. Tremendous fun - more please!

>

GoPro is a-go. I have plundered the savings for a

GoPro Hero3+

. It will be used for filming adventurous antics but also to supplement sport photography coverage. Watch this space for moving pictures!

2014.01.## NIBAS Commission

I have been covering a lot of indoor climbing events this winter.

Directly as a result of this came a commission for the National Indoor Bouldering Award Scheme (NIBAS). They are setting up the scheme to follow a similar programme for roped climbing. This provides teaching, training manuals and log books to help direct kids and schools as they learn the ropes (or in this case, boulders).

I was given a brief to produce a selection of imagery for this purpose, got in touch with the very talented TCA youth squad and subsequently also Bristol Grammar School, then organised some really great shoots.

All the climbers, right down to the weeniest of them were great with helping me out getting the shots I needed.

I didn’t take the posed element as far as I might have (introducing better lighting would have helped tremendously). Instead I wanted to capture the climbing as if it were another competition, me in the sidelines catching the action. This meant more opportunities for variety of shots at the expense of noise and light quality.

2014.01.02 Bath Stratus Islands by Tom Glendinning

This was before Christmas. Late in the morning, banks of fog came rolling through the Bath bowl, with ragged waves and tumults on the surface of an insubstantial sea reaching up the surrounding hills. This spectacle was extremely unusual as it was so late in the day, was moving so quickly and did not appear overnight then dissipate, rather

coalescing

and moving through several times. I took these shots from Bathwick hill.

2013.12.08 Winter Wonder

This was very exciting.

Jackson Kingsley, who set up Cinematica Media, got me involved in a project he has been working on for the last 2 months with Leigh Haggerwood, a local Bath singer/ composer sensation.

Winter Wonder is a Victorian themed music video filmed in Englishcombe tithe barn amidst jollity and christmas cheer.

I went along to cover behind the scenes of filming. Needless to say I had great fun, jumping in-between everything going on, trying desperately not to be in shot, the enthusiasm of the whole cast and crew (mostly local, and many of whom volunteered) was rather infectious.

The strange thing was that whilst I recognised the tune, imagery etc in the music video - having listened to it on repeat during a day of filming - I did not know ANY of the lyrics. Some linguistic part of my brain shuts off during photographic concentration. It also causes me to poke my tongue out.

Anyhow, see my best pick of the day on flickr.

Here is the link to the youtube video if being ridiculously Christmassily happy is your thing:

2013.10/11 Winter Redpoint Boulder Comps

I’ve been getting on the climbing competition racket.

Whilst I am not much of a boulder comp goer myself, they are great fun to be at and photograph. So far I have covered three comps at Redpoint Climbing Centre in Bristol, and another at my digs, The Climbing Academy, with more coming up soon.

So far so tremendously fun. Best of all is the concerted collection of silly faces I now have in my photo library…

Being at the comps is a way of helping out my local climbing venues, and potentially providing them with advertisement material when they need it and I can acquire model releases. However for each event I offer the photos for sale on my website, like when you do a mud run or skydive but loads cheaper.

I’m also testing out a plan to have some dedicated regular climbers exchange stock photo model releases for free photos of themselves looking extremely strong. If it works out I’ll expand this idea further and build a big stock library! Climbers who would like to be in on this to contact me :)

2013.11.21 Basil Spence Crit

This is a delightful reminiscence. Sort of.

Last week it was 2 years to the day that I had my own trial by critique on the infamously stressful ‘Basil Spence’ group architects and engineers project when I was studying at Bath. Actually I was happy how we did, and I had a great team of guys - however I did not feel envious of the 4th years as I covered their crits as a photographer this time. I owe my recent re-incursion into the department to my head of year, the untiring Martin Gledhill. In fact I have gone so far with his and (my old personal tutor-) Daniel’s involvement to run some tutoring/ workshop sessions for the architect students. This is to teach them some photography skills to better capture and represent their ever-increasingly incredible model making skills as a key part of the imagery in their final hand-ins.

So it’s getting busy with TGP - Hurrah!

Fun and games aplenty. Lots coming up when I have a moment to write in the old diary.

2013.11.11 TEDxBRS 2013 Failure

Since joining the incredible team of volunteers behind TEDx Bristol last May, I ended up organising the stills team for the day and sourcing photographers.

The event in Colston Hall sold out and great fun was had by all. The topic of the talks was FAILURE.

I covered mainstage from the balcony (only the stalls were filled with the 1000 delegates so I had plenty of room to run about).

Vicky Symons

was on speaker portraits, Kenneth Shaw covered audience photos and second MainStage camera.

Jamie Dunbar

was front of house and backstage to get a feel of the atmosphere. A really great team of cameras - looking forward to working with them again. I also got Jackson Kingsley from

Cinematica

involved to do backstage filming.

Shooting all day for this sort of event was tremendous fun, there were one or two more hairy talks for me where I changed lens about 5 times - but aside from a definite need now to go and save for a Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS to handle low light better, and dream of a newer sensor than in the 7D, I feel it went great.

An extended expedition in search of Herefordian landscape and scenery this post.

I felt more than usually unlucky with promised beautiful skies turning all altostratus on me. In particular on one day forecasted as blustery clear skies, the only good light I got was for no more than 5 minutes just before sunrise, then dead flat all day. I had waterproof gloves this time but wet feet continually for 4 days, as I explored around and used any time with bad light to scout possible locations to come back to. At least the mist and sun came out for me over Checkley on my last morning doing a very close to home shoot.

All the resulting shots come from S or SE of Hereford - so hoping to scout N and NW more next time.

This has been a crazy week. It started with a last-minute trip to Hereford to begin work on a landscape commission to shoot iconic Herefordian scenery - so thank you Mark for making my job amazing. I was catching a potential gap in the weather just after the storm blew through leaving choppy, unsettled weather patterns in it’s wake. Opportunity for dramatic light thought I.
I drove up Sunday to try my luck with a sunset (no-go, just watched rain approaching) but had a good scout at Frome Hill which has good potential for a whole overview shot of central Herefordshire.) Anyhow I was in position to drive over to Hay Bluff at the north end of Offa’s Dyke, a familiar escarpment making a sharp edge to the landscape viewed West from all over Hereford. The idea was to shoot this profile from closer to get some detail and good light on it. I scouted around and ended up taking the sunset (along with some night sky shots) from Cusop Hill, just south of Hay-on-Wye) although without the best of success. Low storm clouds in the west stole my light.

I had planned to sleep in the car on location but ended up at staying with my sister near Hay. Better sleep for my back.
Up at 5 to make it up Cefn Hill before sunrise. Disaster: Rain came in just after the sun got up and soaked me. I had on 2 base layers, micro fleece, insulated jacket and waterproof (3 hoods + hat) so I was warm and dry except for my legs and UN-waterproof gloved hands. My fingers were so deeply cold in the wind afterwards that some nice men I met earlier on took pity and gave me tea to revive them!

I persisted and luckily the weather cleared and I got some good light on Hay Bluff from 8-9am. With the good light gone I made my way home to Bath for a climbing competition shoot in the evening, driving via the Vale of Ewyas to case it out for a potential future shoot. Much more Hereford scenery planned so look for new blog posts!

2013.10.07 Landscapes and Early Mornings by Mister Tom

I have been taking advantage of a self-organised time schedule already, so the offering in this post are the results of some recent landscapes in Bath taken at unusual times normally unavailable to me. I am already developing a habit of sneaking out early to take some photos and getting back before my more sensible half realises it's morning yet…

Many more and much earlier mornings/ later nights to come - Landscapes are all in the planning. That and having a tripod and polariser on your person at all times for when you haven't planned. Well? 3kg of camera and lens is taken for granted right?
